Waltham, 7th Feburary 2011
More exciting news emerged from the Global Premier Soccer office this week, with the announcement of a new tie established between GPS and Scottish Premier League (SPL) team, St. Mirren Football Club.
Formed in 1876, St. Mirren FC is a prestigious club, steeped in history and tradition and currently play in the top tier of Scottish soccer. The team based in Paisley, Renfrewshire has recently opened a new state of the art, 8,000 spectator capacity stadium named St. Mirren Park.
In 2007, Andy Dorman, a former Boston University student, moved from New England to Scotland to play for St. Mirren FC in the SPL. In 2011, St. Mirren are looking to the US again and with the help of Global Premier Soccer, are aiming to source some of the best High School players to participate at a trial period with the club in Scotland during the Summer of 2011.
Should a player have a successful tryout period with St. Mirren, the club will look to set them up on a student scholarship at Glasgow Caledonian University, while installing them as a player on their U-19 team, with a view to progressing on to the SPL side.
"This is a huge move in the right direction for GPS and we can now provide another, life-changing, professional opportunity to US High School student-athlete’s, who dream about playing soccer in Europe", explains GPS Operations Director, Peter McDonnell.
McDonnell goes on to describe how GPS are already on the hunt for talent to suggest to the SPL club, "We have a couple of players in the pipeline to suggest to St. Mirren and with a busy spring club season on the horizon, we are confident that we can get some real talent prepared to send to Scotland on trial during the Summer months...This is a mouth-watering proposition for any young soccer player".
It is going to be a busy but exciting few months as GPS work on sourcing the cream of US High School students for St. Mirren, not only from New England, but further a field. "We plan to run a competetion within the next few months in Boston in the form of a trial game, the top player or players from this evaluation could win the chance to go on trial in Scotland with St. Mirren FC", declares McDonnell.
